Becoming a WMG online guru

Q: I have never taught online? What do I need to get started?

A: Most importantly, you need a passion for teaching, and you need to commit a few hours each week on a regular basis for internet lessons. You should also have a reliable broadband internet connection and good equipment. See our Getting Started page.

Q: I already teach online? Why should I teach on WorldMusicGuru?

A: There is a whole world out there that wants to learn music from you! But high student turnover requires a constant search for new students. WorldMusicGuru also guarantees that you will get paid for your lessons from one source, rather than managing separate billing for each student. Convenient advance student payments and refunds mean less risk and hassle for you, letting you focus on teaching. Finally, you will gain exposure through our active promotion efforts and partnerships with community organizations in the West. Our newsletters and forums provide you the opportunity to promote your performances and share your knowledge with the music world.

Q: I am a professional musician who tours frequently. Can I teach on WorldMusicGuru?

A: Yes, if you can manage your lessons, or set your student expectations. If you have an unpredictable schedule with frequent lesson re-scheduling and cancellations, you should make that clear to your students. Also, your students should not sign up for Automatic Monthly Billing, since there will not be refunds for missed lessons. Of course, if you are able to teach while on tour, then this is a moot point.

Q: What qualifications do I need in order to teach on WorldMusicGuru?

A: All gurus who meet the basic requirements (PC, webcam, and good broadband access), commit some time each week to teaching online, and share our passion for teaching music are welcome to contribute to the WMG community. Students will view your Guru Profile and decide whether your background fits their needs. See our Terms of Use for details.

Q: Can I advertise my performances on my Google calendar?

Absolutely! Your Google Calendar is your's to do with what you wish. You can even schedule your other appointments (such as in-person lessons) on the same calendar. If you follow our configuration tutorial, your calendar will even be found in public searches on the Internet.

Fees and payments

Q: Does it cost anything to join as a Guru?

A: No. You can join for free. Fees are only assessed on lessons purchased by students. Fees start at 18% for your first student, and less as more students take lessons from you. You will receive a Schedule of Fees after submitting your Guru Contact form.

Q: What are the lesson rates?

A: Gurus set their own rates and lesson length (a lesson is the same as one session or class). You can even set up multiple rates for different students or instruments, or ages. Your lesson descriptions are entered as shopping cart items for students to browse and purchase.

Q: How do I get paid?

A: Students purchase lessons throughout each month. The total of all purchases, minus our fees, are then paid to you (or your bank), in the first week of the following month. Since students on subscription billing are charged in advance at the end of the previous month, you will receive those funds within a week or two.
