Tabla Solo by Prafulla Athalye
WorldMusicGuru announces a performance of solo Tabla (north Indian drums) in Westford, MA on March 20, 2011. Award-winning tabla exponent Prafulla Athalye of Mumbai, India will present traditional and modern North Indian Classical rhythmic compositions.
"We are thrilled to help bring this rare musical event to the Boston area," said Raj Puranik, founder of WorldMusicGuru. "Full-length concert performances of the tabla are quite rare, and this event helps further our mission of promoting traditional and ethnic music."
Prafulla Athalye is a long-time disciple of Ustad Alla Rakha, a legendary master drummer who introduced Tabla to the West in the sixties. Prafulla has also matured under the guidance of Zakir Hussain, the preeminent Tabla master of our time, as well as under Pandit Arvind Mulgaonkar. Prafulla has distinguished himself over his 28-year performing span with several awards in state and national competitions in India. He has also accompanied many of the stalwarts of Indian Classical music today including Pt. Jasraj. The Boston appearance is part of his North American tour.
For those not familiar with Tabla, a pre-concert talk will provide fundamental rhythmic concepts to heighten enjoyment of the program. More concert details, video clips of Prafulla, and free tutorials on north Indian rhythmic concepts can be found at www.worldmusicguru.com.
