About harmonium

Harmonium, an instrument said to have originated in France, has achieved prominence as the preferred accompaniment to north Indian classical vocal music (Hindustani music). A combination of wind and keyboard features (similar to an accordian) give it a mellow drone-like sound similar to bagpipes, make it a good complement to the human voice, while being more accessible to music students than the venerable sarangi, a beautiful-sounding but notoriously difficult instrument.

About harmonium lessons

As harmonium is generally played as an accompaniment to a Hindustani vocal concert, harmonium students learn the same material that north Indian vocal students are taught - based on the Indian classical concepts of Raga (melody) and Taal (rhythm). The obvious difference is that vocal students undertake voice training, while harmonium students learn the keyboard and other techniques specific to the harmonium.

Equipment you need
